The Basics

What is a Smart Home?
A smart home is a home that is equipped with technology to remotely control and automate household systems. Examples include lighting equipped with motion sensors, smart plugs, thermostats, energy monitors, and other connected appliances.

What is Home Automation?
Home automation allows you to monitor and control home features such as lighting, the temperature, entertainment systems, appliances, and energy usage.

Why does Dominion Energy care about Smart Homes?
There are many benefits to smart home products including the ability to control devices and save energy when not in use. Therefore, Dominion Energy is helping their residential customers access Smart Home products that provide energy savings.

Why did Dominion Energy pick these specific manufacturers/models?
The kit components were selected based on advanced technology, competitive pricing, and overall customer experience.

Is there an incentive for Dominion Energy’s Smart Home Program?
Yes! Depending on the products you select for your kit, you are eligible for instant rebates of up to $130 when you purchase your smart home products from the Dominion Energy online store at smarthome.domsavings.com.

Is there a shipping fee?
Shipping is free. It typically takes up to ten days to receive your order and you will be provided with a UPS tracking number after checkout.

Can I add additional smart home products to my home?
Yes! We hope your first purchase is just a starting point or part of your smart home ecosystem.

Eligibility/Compatibility

What kind of customers are eligible to participate in this program?
Any Dominion Energy residential customer who lives in a single-family home in the state of Virginia or North Carolina can participate however there are a few exceptions:

If you are a renter, you should get approval from your landlord for purchasing hardware that will be installed in the home (thermostat or home energy monitor).
If you or your home’s previous owners received a rebate for a smart thermostat through a Dominion Energy program, you will not be eligible to purchase the additional thermostat through this program but you can still purchase the base kit and the home energy monitor.
If you or your home’s previous owners received a rebate for a Smart Home Energy Management System under Dominion Energy’s Home Retrofit program, you would be ineligible to purchase the Smart Home kit.

How do I know if the ecobee thermostat I select is compatible with my home/HVAC system?

How do I know if the Sense Home Energy Monitor is compatible with my home?

What if I already participated in Dominion Energy’s Smart Thermostat Program?
If you have participated in Dominion Energy’s Smart Thermostat program, you will not be eligible to purchase an additional thermostat through this program. However, you can still purchase other available smart home products.

I just want to purchase one product not two or more. Is that possible?

To be eligible to participate in the Smart Home Program, you must purchase at least two different smart home products from different categories. Two products from separate product categories define a Smart Home Kit.

I purchased some of these devices, but I did not purchase them from Dominion Energy’s online store. Can I submit for a rebate?
The only way to obtain the rebate is to purchase directly from Dominion Energy’s online store at smarthome.domsavings.com.

Are these products compatible with Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, or Apple?
All the devices are compatible with Amazon’s Alexa and Google Home. Most kit components are also compatible with Samsung’s SmartThings and the Apple Homekit. For more information on compatibility, visit each manufacturer’s website.

I have solar panels. Can I connect the home energy monitor to monitor my solar production?

Installation

Do I need to hire a contractor to install my kit?
It depends on what products you purchase. If you purchase a home energy monitor, you are required to hire a licensed electrician of your choice to install the device inside your electrical panel. In addition, while you can install the add-on thermostat on your own, some customers may prefer to hire an electrician to install that as well.

I heard that a home energy monitor is easy to install. Why do you require a licensed electrician to install it?
Installation of a home energy monitor is complex and must be installed inside the home’s electrical panel. As a result, you need to hire a licensed electrician in the state of Virginia/North Carolina to install it to ensure the safety of you and your household.

Where should I place the smart plugs?
Use smart plugs inside your home in a dry environment only unless specifically identified for outdoor use. Consider using smart plugs with devices that may draw power in standby mode. For example, a computer, television, indoor/outdoor security lighting, dehumidifier, or air purifier.
